THE BEACON is an organization working to end homelessness in Houston while restoring dignity, self-respect and hope to our neighbors in need.  Since opening in 2007, THE BEACON has grown from serving 80 clients per day to nearly 800 each day of operation.

Due to this growing need, THE BEACON will add a fifth day of service each week in its day center.  The Day Center at The Beacon, located in the heart of downtown Houston, provides hot meals, hot showers, laundry services, and case management to Houston’s poorest citizens.  Currently the Day Center at The Beacon is open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.  However, starting April 3, the Day Center will add Thursdays to its days of operation.  This increase in capacity will allow THE BEACON to offer more showers, more loads of clean laundry, and more time for the homeless to be sheltered from Houston’s extreme weather.

The services offered by THE BEACON are 85% volunteer driven so with this expansion, the need has increased.  Volunteering at THE BEACON is easy and rewarding.  THE BEACON can accommodate both individual volunteers ages 13+ or groups of volunteers. Court mandated volunteer hours are accepted. Volunteer duties include:

  • Meal preparation
  • Meal Servers/Monitors
  • Client Reception/Intake
  • Volunteer Reception
  • Laundry Services
  • Weekly food prep
  • Day End Clean Up/Next Day Prep.

The biggest need for volunteers is on weekdays, Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, especially in the 6:45AM – 9:00AM shift, but there are volunteer opportunities each operating day.  Daily shift times are as follows:

  • 1st Shift 6:45AM – 9:00AM
  • 2nd Shift 8:45AM – 11:00AM
  • 3rd Shift 10:45AM – 2:00PM
  • 4th Shift 1:45PM – 4:00PM

**Weekly Meal Prep and Bread Baking shifts are each Thursday and Saturday for 1:45PM – 5:00PM
