Houstonians are invited to join in celebration of Volunteer Houston’s 40 years of service and over one million volunteers placed in the Houston community.  Free and open to the public, Volunteer Houston’s 40th Birthday Celebration and Volunteer Fair is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014, at the Andrea and Bill White Promenade in downtown Houston’s Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney Street, Houston, TX 77010.

“Houstonians have big hearts and have always given of their time for the benefit of those in need in our great city and that’s why we are very excited and proud to celebrate Volunteer Houston’s 40 years of service in the Houston region,” said Mike Gustafson, Volunteer Houston board of directors president and ConocoPhillips executive. “With our new database, increased branding efforts, and new partnerships, we are on track to place 50,000 individuals in volunteer opportunities by the end of 2015.”

During the event, 40 Houston-area nonprofit organizations will be showcased at a Volunteer Fair where they will raise awareness of their services and recruit volunteers. Among the 50 nonprofit organizations participating will be: Literacy Advance of Houston; Houston Food Bank; Children’s Museum of Houston; Communities in Schools of Houston; Houston Community ToolBank; Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston; Vita Living, Inc.; and Trinity Lutheran Downtown, to name a few.

The free, family event will feature a Shell Kid’s Zone with games and activities, food, entertainment, and a large community service project area. At 1:30 p.m., a short recognition ceremony will take place where a City of Houston proclamation will be presented and the day will be dedicated “Volunteer Houston Day” in the City of Houston.  Additionally, each person who attends and talks to four nonprofit organizations will be entered to win several $250 Gallery Furniture gift cards, among other prizes.

Other fun activities include Houston Dynamo and Starbucks booths, and KSBJ and NGEN radio will broadcast live from the event. As well, Volunteer Houston will demonstrate its user-friendly volunteer database. Please click here for more information.
