Tips for Writing a Need:
The more detail you provide about the opportunity the more likely you are to find interested volunteers. Try to answer questions you would want to know before you volunteer: What would I, the volunteer, do? When am I wanted? Where do I need to be? Why should I volunteer for this agency?
title – simply the position
description – the first few words will appear along with the title on the needs page so there is no need to repeat the title – it could be helpful to start with your agency’s name
location – include an address or at least include zip code for that need
hours or date(s) – Mondays and Wednesdays 6pm-9pm or Saturday, October 15th 9am-11am
contact info – phone number and/or email address
interest – please select only areas which directly apply to the need (not your agency)
clusters – please select as appropriate (one-time, on-going, community service hours, kid friendly,
Volunteer Houston coordinates summer internships for various nonprofits through the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program and the Shell Nonprofit Internship Program. Non-profits can rent tools through the Houston Tool Bank. Google AdWords Grants offers free Google Advertising for non-profits (a helpful guide). Be sure to have backup stuff for volunteers to do. Ways to recognize volunteers: say thank you, Presidential Service Award, Greater Houston Service Awards, T-Shirts.
