The SERVE HOUSTON AmeriCorps program places teams of diverse, college aged Members at organizations across Houston to support programs promoting equitable and healthy futures for vulnerable populations. Members will engage the elderly, individuals with disabilities, veterans and other vulnerable populations in living healthier by providing outreach, training and hands-on activities on nutrition, wellness practices, social and physical fitness and other activities to directly benefit your constituents.

SERVE HOUSTON is the new AmeriCorps Program powered by Volunteer Houston (VH), a program of Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston (IM).

Become a Member

Any combination of these characteristics make the ideal candidate for a SERVE HOUSTON AmeriCorps Member. However, we encourage anyone who meets the following eligibility requirements to apply:

  • Be between 18 years and 36 years old by the beginning of the service period.
  • Be able to pass background checks.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent by the beginning of the service period.
  • Be a current student, recent graduate, gap year student, or college aspirational student.
    • Current students are individuals currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program at an accredited college, university or trade school.
    • Recent graduates are individuals who have graduated within the last 3 years.
    • A college aspirational student is an individual with plans to attend college or trade school after completion of the service period.
    • Students between semesters or school years are eligible to apply.
  • Have a valid driver’s license or photo ID.
  • Be willing and ready to serve in person at your assigned project site.
  • Flexibility and a willingness to serve your community wherever and however you are called to do so. 
  • Must be able to serve up to 20 hours per week between September 19th, 2022 to April 6th, 2023. 
  • Must have no competing commitments. 
  • Be able to convey a meaningful connection to the Greater Houston community whether by residence or some other affiliation.
  • Be willing to comply with the COVID-19 protocol and vaccination requirements at Interfaith Ministries and project site, which will include proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
  •  Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.

Become a Project Site

  • A team with a maximum of five SERVE HOUSTON AmeriCorps Members recruited, vetted, onboarded and initially trained with continued oversight and training by SERVE HOUSTON ready to accomplish projects for your organization
  • A Project Team Leader employed by IM to assist in overseeing Member work, professional development, and project deliverables
  • Eight hours of training for your staff Project Supervisor facilitated by SERVE HOUSTON
  • Simple system to record Member hours and track progress
  • Overall administration and facilitation of the AmeriCorps program and compliance requirements associated with it, including but not limited to a monthly living allowance, and a Segal Education award upon completion of the program
  • An ongoing partnership with IM, VH and SERVE HOUSTON programs
  • An association with a prestigious national service program – AmeriCorps
  • Enhanced visibility in the Houston community
  • Meaningful direct service team projects with clear and measurable goals, expectations and deliverables that adhere to SERVE HOUSTON’s Healthy Futures AmeriCorps Program guidelines
  • A dedicated staff person to serve as Project Supervisor for your AmeriCorps team (train Members, approve hours, oversee project work and adhere to AmeriCorps guidelines)
  • An agreed upon morning, afternoon, or evening project shift for a team of Members for approximately hours per week per Member
  • Assistance for SERVE HOUSTON staff in Member recruiting process as needed
  • A workspace and/or technology if needed for each Member to complete project work along with a COVID plan for Members to be able to work in the case of a COVID related change of circumstances
  • On the job skills training for Members specific to work that will be done at your organization
  • A Placement Fee of $10,000 for a team with a maximum of five Members
  • A willingness to allow Members to participate in disaster response work if our community suffers a disaster during the AmeriCorps program term
